INLAND WATERWAYS CREW COURSE - 1 Day Course
About This Course:

This course is ideal for introducing friends or family members to crewing a vessel on the inland waterways, and for giving them an understanding of how they can assist the helm.

Your instructor will cover all the basics of being a useful crew member, including personal safety; communication on board; throwing a mooring line; some basic boat handling; helping in locking operations; how to be a good look out; what to do in an emergency and looking after the environment.

INLAND WATER WAYS HELMSMAN - 2 Day Course

About This Course:

This course is for anyone wanting to cruise the UK’s inland waterways or Europe’s extensive network of lakes, rivers and canals.It deals specifically with the requirements of the inland boater, whether they be a narrow boat owner or cruiser enthusiast.

It assumes no prior knowledge and so is ideal for the first timer, yet the more seasoned boater will learn plenty of tricks of the trade and tips to make their boating safer and more enjoyable.

It is a hands-on course with minimal theory, and is not only an opportunity to learn new skills but also a fun day out!

This is a two day course and can be taken either on a our boat or on your own boat.

This course combines the crew course and helmsman courses together. This course is perfect training for a family. The two adults will complete the Helmsman Course whilst the children will complete the Crew Course.

About This Course:

This course can also help you get the best from your modern electronic aids such as GPS and radar, which are now virtually standard equipment on modern motor cruisers.

Before attending the course you should be able to navigate and are well advised to attend the RYA Day Skipper shorebased course to brush up on your skills (see Navigation and seamanship theory on the left).

COASTAL - 5 Day Course
About This Course:

Before taking this course it is virtually essential to have attended the equivalent shorebased course, to ensure that time is not wasted teaching theory on board. (See Navigation and seamanship theory on the left).

An important aspect of this course is learning to take command and make decisions resulting in relaxed, well-planned passages and a happy crew.

Don’t expect to coast through without making the occasional error – learn you strengths and weaknesses and gain knowledge from your mistakes. By the end of the course you should  be ready to build on your experience and maybe work towards a Certificate of Competence (see Yachtmaster on the left).

Passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making and ability as a skipper, radar, boat handling, adverse weather conditions, emergency situations

About This Course:

Before you can take the Day Skipper practical you need to have either a Day Skipper theory certificate or have knowledge to that level, this course allows you to take the theory course and seamlessly move on to take the Practical Course.

The theory course will cover everything as set out in the stand alone theory course syllabus and be conducted in our classroom followed by the Day Skipper Practical course. (If you are new to boating instead of going straight to the Day Skipper Practical you may wish to undertake the Helmsman Course followed by the Day Skipper Practical. The combined Helmsman and Day Skipper course is Five days.)

After completing successfully the course you will be able to confidently go out to make day time passages in local waters.

About This Course:

It provides a practical introduction to boat handling and safety in powerboats, it covers boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. the course may be run on a variety of boat types both planning, and displacement and the certificate will be endorsed to show the type of boat in which the training took place.

Course Content:

Launch and recovery preparation of boat and crew, boat handling picking up and securing to a mooring buoy leaving and coming alongside man overboard (theory).

Able to drive under supervision.

POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 - 2 Day Course

About This Course:

it provides the skill and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence. It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats. It focuses on low-speed close quatres handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speeds and collision regulations. The course can take place at Inland or Coastal locations. It may be conducted on a variety of boat types; the certificate will be endorsed with the type of boat the training took place on.

Course Content:

Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving, and coming alongside, man overboard, basic navigation and tides and weather.

Ability After The Course:

Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of the craft.

CLASSROOM COURSES:

SRC VHF / DSC PLUS ASSESSMENT - SPECIALIST COURSE

About This Course:

SRC: Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required to operate a marine VHF radio. An SRC course is required before you can take the assessment which comprises a short exam and practical assessment of a DSC Radio so as to be able to obtain an Operators license.

 

Course Content:

The course will look at the theory behind the VHF and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) systems, the practical uses and the practical application of the theory with plenty of chances to practice making voice calls and DSC calls including Distress and Mayday calls.

 

Ability After the Course:

You will have the knowledge and confidence to use a Category D VHF radio to its full potential.

Previous Experience or Knowledge Required:

None, you will however be expected to do a minimum of four hours reading in preparation before attending the course.

SRC Assessment only:

If you have studied the SRC course on line, using the RYA interactive training scheme then you will still need to undergo an assessment to obtain your Operators License.

DIESEL ENGINE - SPECIALIST COURSE

About This Course:

Designed to provide the basic knowledge of the workings of a Diesel inboard engine, to be able to carry out basic engine checks, and maintenance tasks and diagnose basic mechanical problems.

Course Content:

Understanding the basic workings of a vessels inboard Diesel engine system along with its ancillary components, learning the importance of carrying out basic engine cheeks pre running, during and at the end of its use, to include trouble shooting and basic maintenance.

Ability After the Course:

To understand and comprehend the workings of your Diesel engine and the requirements to maintain a fully functioning engine, to carry out routine checks and to trouble shoot problems or be able to eliminate problems and recognize the ways to preserve your engine, to be able to change fuel filters bleed the engine change the oil and air filters and belts and more.

About This Course:

Online RYA SRC course. It enables you to study the VHF course the same syllabus as the classroom course but at your own speed and in your own time on your PC or Laptop

About This Course:

To be able to use the Inland waterways of Europe you need to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the Rules of the European waterways, this course gives you the information and knowledge needed to obtain a certificate to show that you have achieved the required level of knowledge of the code which can then be endorsed on your ICC.

Course Content:

This course covers the required Code information including sign and markings, dealing with traffic communication via sound signals and berthing and environmental matters and other rules of the road.
